I am a computer scientist by training and an entrepreneur by heart. My research focuses on using probabilistic models and machine learning to understand complex domains involving large amounts of uncertainty. I like to be driven by real-world problems. Most recently, I have focused on problems in computer vision and in computational biology and medicine. Companies that I’ve helped found include Coursera, Calico Life Sciences, and Insitro.

I see myself continuing to be involved in the interface of academic discovery and societal impact. I’m still passionate about improving education for all learners through a purpose-built, engaging, accessible, and dynamic online learning platform. Biomedical and drug discovery problems that can now be addressed by artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies are of great interest as we seek to decrease the cost of healthcare with scalable technology.
